EIR does much of its ecumenical work in coalition with other organizations. The Episcopal Church is one of thirty-six churches that belong to the National Council of Churches in Christ (NCCC), working together towards the aim of Christian unity, peace and justice, and other areas such as Christian education and environmental awareness.
On the international level, the Episcopal Church is a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC), making us part of a network of 400 million Christians belonging to more than 340 churches, denominations and communities throughout the world. In addition to these two main ecumenical bodies, the Office of Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations works with many other international and national ecumenical organizations and institutes.
Many town, city and state councils of churches are based on the ecumenical model of the WCC and NCCC.
